My art is a calling, not a choice. I know at my deepest core that this is what I am meant to do. Many artists talk about their art as a form of self-expression. But in my case, I feel that the creation of my paintings is directed by something external. Call it inspiration, a muse, the universe, God, whatever you prefer. I choose not to label it and to simply accept it. Until recently, my abstract paintings were created through the spontaneous application of paint with my fingers. This technique enabled me to create a variety of textures and designs that could not be achieved with a brush. But this past December, I was fortunate enough to spend on the Gulf of Mexico and my work changed profoundly. Many of my paintings since then have focused on sky and water. For these less abstract paintings, I’ve begun mixing some of the colors beforehand, making occasional use of brushes, and planning a bit before putting paint to canvas. Many people are attracted to the soothing affect of my work. Look at one of my paintings for a few minutes, take a few deep breaths, and then perhaps come back to reality.
